Professionally-Driven Boards Foster the Online Design Community

11 Nov, 2009 — A professionally developed and maintained online community for web and graphic designers was recently launched by Channelfuse Network. A new player in the industry of online community development, Channelfuse aims to create member-driven communities wherein the users will propel the forum’s growth and progress.

DesignersForum.com is an online community that targets web and graphic designers. Unique to other online communities for graphic designers, DesignersForum encourages user-submitted reviews and articles. An avenue for showcasing designs and critiquing other works is also provided, as this further enhances user interaction and relationship building.

Encouraging Member Participation

Our member base would have 4 major groups –

Passives – who seek effortless entertainment and information
Actives – who participate in activities and topics created by others
Motivators – who create topics and plans activities of interest to other members
Caretakers – serve as intermediaries between members and staff, and are usually seasoned motivators.

We reckon that around 85% of them would be passives, 12 % actives, 2.5% motivators and 0.5%will be caretakers. Total time spent within the community is dominated by the actives are motivators. These are the people who create the majority of the content, which attracts the 85% of passives who represent the bulk of the participants. The care and feeding of these leasers is critical to the success of the community.

An important goal of community development is to move people from passive readers to active contributors.

In the end, virtual communities, although they rely on a variety of technologies., they are about people. They represent a new kind of social institution that provides new ways for individuals with common interests to meet and interact with each other.

Interacting with our Members

Our community shall be based on the following elements –

Cohesion: the sense of there being a group identity and that an individual belongs to the group
Effectiveness: the impact that the group has on the member’s lives and the outside world.
Help: the perceived ability of members to ask for and receive various kinds of assistance
Relationships: the likelihood of group members interacting individually, including forming friendships
Self-regulation: the ability of the group to police itself
Participation: the extent to which each member’s view are respected and involved in developing the community and the website

“ In deciding to participate, management should be certain that they have staff resources with the expertise/information that will be of interest of the community, and hat these staff members have the interactive skills to represent the organization effectively within the community.”

The interaction between the staff and member can be very valuable, but with a little risk, since we would be potentially exposed to the commentary of critics and unhappy members. How we respond, to these critiques will be carefully watched by other members of the community. If we are not prepared to respond promptly to the queries, it could develop a reputation as an organization that does not stand behind its information.

On the other hand, through effective participation, the organization can build a base of support among community members that yields loyalty and goodwill for the organization.

We hope we can be flexible and caring enough towards our members. Since it is they who decide the future of Channelfuse. We are merely supplying the platform !!

Community of interest formation is perhaps the single unique attribute of interactive media. Anyone who is interested in doing business on the internet needs to be aware of virtual communities. Perhaps no other technique is potentially more powerful for aggregating and communicating with specific target audiences.

People on virtual communities use words on screens to exchange pleasantries, and argue, engage in intellectual discourse, conduct commerce, exchange knowledge, share emotional support, make plans, brainstorm, gossip, feud, fall in love, find friends and lose them, play games, flirt, create a little high art and a lot of idle talk. People in virtual communities do just about everything people do in real life, but we leave our bodies behind.

There are skeptics who would argue that virtual communities lack some critical elements that define ‘real’ communities. Like, a feel of permanence and belonging, a sense of location, warmth from the local history. It takes virtually no effort for an individual to leave a virtual community. Well, we would want to address these issues, and bring a change about in the fashion in which a virtual community is handled. For us, our communities will foster collaboration and cooperation among participants to the benefit of all members and the participating organization.

Channelfuse will soon process banner advertisements

ChannelFuse has partnered with BuySellAds to outsource its online banner advertisements for potential clients on all its forums. We are impressed with the simplicity of using BuySellAds since it eliminates the time and effort to serve an advertiser. We can therefore concentrate on what we do best; and that is to foster a community.

Channelfuse will decide on a medium to serve newsletter , text-ads and other forms of advertisements on our network. Advertisements on all our network sites will be carefully processed and managed. Channelfuse will make sure not to oversell banner spaces, nor do anything to hamper the clean design and user experience. The advertisement rates will be optimized for the first 15 months of launch to encourage and build a strong relation with the advertisers.
